Smile 2 Is there something to laugh about? Is there something to smile at? Two questions so different that they require two separate answers. To the first: It’s important to be able to laugh… even at oneself. Moreover, people constantly repeat and commit acts — even today — that are so grotesque and destructive that one might need to laugh just to endure them. To the second: There may be many things one wishes were different… but which have a scope or reach that exceeds what one can hope to change. In such cases, it may be helpful to change oneself… to change the way one assigns meaning, and mentally sets limits on how much space a situation — which cannot be changed — is allowed to take up. I have personally benefited greatly from positive psychology as a tool… where melancholy and a furrowed brow have turned into a smile. And that has become the series Smile: A big smile, where I hope it’s clear that it’s not the same as being carefree and naively cheerful.
